"Wentworth-By-The-Sea, 1969 ~ A Novel"
"Everyone is supposed to have at least one novel in them. Mine is called Wentworth-By-The-Sea, 1969: A Novel."
- Susan Chapman Melanson
The story is a first person narrative told by a 23 year old waitress who has opted to spend the summer waitressing at one of the last of the grand hotels on the coast of New Hampshire. The reader is introduced to a colorful cast of characters, both staff and guests, and becomes privy to the places the staff worked, lived and hung out. There are lavish descriptions of the rituals of the Main Dining Room as well as lobster/clam bakes, wedding receptions and conventions that made the hotel famous. Included is insightful commentary on the times, the music of 1969 and the events that made1969 so memorable: the day the first man walked on the moon, the night Ted Kennedy's car plunged off that infamous bridge at Chappaquidick, the weekend of Woodstock and the evening Prince Charles was feted at Wentworth-By-The-Sea with a Grand Ball. The narrator rambles through Portsmouth, NH and several of the local legends come to life in the author's first full-length novel:  "Wentworth-By-The-Sea, 1969".
